Mystery dish - fried potatoes sprinkled with sugar?

A very dear elderly gentleman is looking for something his mother made out of mashed potatoes which were fried and then sprinkled with sugar.

I am assuming this was something made out of leftovers since they might have been poor as were so many others. I truly hope we can help him.

And one more thing... I am so very happy that I came upon your site. Since I have been married to an Italian for 52 years and am still learning so many wonderful recipes.
